Pathology

The Pathology department maintains a full-service diagnostic laboratory for St. Elizabeth's, evaluating both surgical specimens and frozen sections.  The cytology division reviews more than 12,000 specimens a year, including a large number of fine-needle aspirates.  The pathology laboratory processes both inpatient and outpatient tests, as well as those from area physician offices and from the Brighton Marine Health Center. The St. Elizabeth's pathology laboratory also serves as a reference laboratory for three other Boston hospitals and as the molecular pathology service for six area hospitals.  Clinical laboratories function 24 hours a day, seven days a week with staff pathologists and medical directors available at all times for special studies, consultations or case reviews.
