St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center provides expert evaluation and caring treatment for patients with a broad range of benign and malignant blood disorders. Led by physicians of national standing, our superb hematology team is delivering state-of-the-art treatment and developing innovative new programs. Among them is one of the few specialized programs in the US for pregnant women with blood disorders.
Our dedicated hematologists are all board-certified faculty members of the Tufts University School of Medicine. They work closely with referring physicians, other specialists and experienced hematology nurses to provide highly skilled, compassionate care designed to meet the needs of each individual patient.
Benign hematology
Our hematologists are expert at diagnosing and treating bleeding disorders, abnormal clotting and diseases of platelets.
To ensure the health of both mother and baby, our reproductive hematology specialists diagnose and treat hematologic problems of clotting or risk of clotting that may occur during pregnancy or the childbearing years.
Plasma Exchange (Apheresis) and other advanced therapies
St. Elizabeth’s nationally known Apheresis Center provides state-of-the-art therapeutic plasma exchange for blood, kidney and neurologic diseases. We are one of very few hospitals offering tandem apheresis (simultaneous plasma exchange and dialysis) for patients with kidney diseases who require both plasmapheresis and hemodialysis.
Malignant hematology
The hematology team at St. Elizabeth’s specializes in advanced treatments for malignant blood disorders such as lymphoma, leukemia and myeloma.
On-site laboratory
With a state-of-the-art blood laboratory located on site, St. Elizabeth’s hematologists are able to rapidly perform a broad range of sophisticated tests, including special diagnostic testing to determine the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Having the laboratory on site enables the doctors who diagnose the blood diseases to meet personally with patients to discuss treatment options.
Clinical Trials and Research
Under the leadership of Dr. Paul J. Hesketh, one of the nation’s leading specialists in lung cancer and supportive care, St. Elizabeth’s hematologists and oncologists regularly carry out clinical trials that provide our patients with access to advanced treatments that may not be available elsewhere in New England.
All services are provided on St. Elizabeth’s convenient Boston campus, with free valet parking for patients and low-cost parking for visitors readily available.
