St. Elizabeth’s nationally known Apheresis Center provides therapeutic plasma exchange for the treatment of blood, neurologic and kidney disorders. One of the largest plasma exchange centers in Boston, the Center uses state-of-the art, high speed and continuous flow technology.

Our specialized apheresis nurses have extensive experience and provide expert, personalized care in order to maximize benefits and assure patients’ comfort and safety during treatments. These compassionate professionals make every effort to accommodate to patients’ schedules and lifestyles. They frequently telephone to check on elderly or infirm patients’ status between visits.

For the convenience of our patients, the Apheresis Center is open for scheduled appointments from Monday through Saturday starting at 6:30 am. Emergency treatments are available 24/7.

Tandem Apheresis

St. Elizabeth’s is one of a very few hospitals to offer tandem apheresis (simultaneous plasma exchange and dialysis) for patients with kidney disease, who require both plasmapheresis and hemodialysis. The St. Elizabeth’s team has published articles on this procedure and has presented nationally on the use of this procedure.

Other advanced therapies

We offer many advanced blood treatments, including:

  • Thrombocytapheresis: (removing platelets from donor blood)
  • Leukocytapheresis (selectively withdrawing white blood cells from donor blood)
  • Exchange of red blood cells

St. Elizabeth’s Apheresis Center is supervised by board certified hematologists who hold faculty appointments at the Tufts University School of Medicine. Our hematologists work closely with referring physicians to ensure continuity of care for their patients.

These services are provided on St. Elizabeth’s convenient and accessible Boston campus, where free valet parking for patients and inexpensive visitor parking are readily available.
