History
Since its founding in 1906 in Fall River, Massachusetts by the Dominican Sisters of the Presentation, Saint Anne's Hospital has grown to provide a spectrum of health care services for residents of southeastern Massachusetts and nearby Rhode Island.
From its first days as a 44-bed facility to its current position as a vital member of Caritas Christi Health Care, the region's only Catholic community hospital has a long and illustrious history of providing care to all members of the area's population, especially those in need. The Dominican Sisters founded the hospital on the principles of charity, compassion, community, cultural diversity, and catholicity, and continue to co-sponsor the hospital today. These founding principles, coupled with a commitment to provide some of the region's most advanced expertise and facilities, continue to make Saint Anne's a true community hospital.
For more than 100 years, Saint Anne's has offered a number of the region's technological "firsts." Since 1976, Saint Anne's has offered the area's most comprehensive cancer care program, including such area radiation therapy "firsts" as intensity-modulated radiation therapy, high-dose rate radiation therapy, and image-guided radiation therapy. In March 2003, the hospital became the region's facility to offer PET imaging (now PET/CT) for the diagnosis and assessment of certain cancers, cardiac conditions, and neurological conditions. Other "firsts" have included laparoscopic surgery for gall bladder removal; insertion of the world's smallest pacemaker; KTP laser for ureteral stones; transesophageal echocardiogram for diagnosis of certain cardiac conditions; and radioactive seed implant therapy for the treatment of prostate cancer.
Saint Anne's prides itself not only on the caliber of its technical care, but especially the quality of the people who make such care possible. Under the guidance of the Dominican Sisters, and since 1991 also in concert with Caritas Christi Health Care, Saint Anne's physicians, nurses, and other health care experts have provided traditional programs, as well as specialty services, that respond to the community's unique needs.
Every decision - decades of building expansions, nursing education, new medical and surgical techniques, revolutionary programs and services - is made with Saint Anne's founders' mission and values in mind. It is the staff's commitment to these ideals that has made Saint Anne's so highly regarded in both the medical and the general community for more than 100 years.
