Psychiatry

Norwood Hospital, by our history and mission, is devoted to helping individuals with a full range of psychiatric and substance abuse problems.

For individuals in crisis, our psychiatry program maintains a toll free crisis hotline, 1-800-331-2900. This Access Center will assist individuals and families in locating appropriate treatment for psychiatric and substance abuse problems. This service offers telephone assistance and face-to-face consultation and is the gateway for admission to the inpatient units or referral to appropriate outpatient care. In addition, the Emergency Department has mental health staff available 24 hours a day to evaluate patients in psychiatric crisis.

The inpatient psychiatry services include a 21-bed adult psychiatric inpatient unit, a 12-bed adult psychiatric inpatient unit for patients with less demanding physical needs and a 28-bed geropsychiatric inpatient unit for those 55 or older. Services on these newly renovated inpatient units include individual and group therapy, medication management, family support and education, treatment planning meetings for care providers and family as well as comprehensive discharge planning to ease patients back into the community. Patients on the geropsychiatric unit are cared for by a staff that is expert in caring for patients with behavioral and cognitive impairments as well as existing medical conditions. Patients have the added benefit of readily available general medical resources nearby if they need them. Comprehensive discharge planning is a service of all three units.

In Foxboro, Caritas Norcap Lodge, which is affiliated with our sister hospital, Good Samaritan Medical Center, has long been well known for its treatment of addictions. The quiet and spacious surroundings provide for an optimal setting for treatment and offer a great start on the road to recovery. This service provides inpatient treatment for detoxification and rehabilitation, which includes comprehensive assessment and treatment planning, medically supervised detoxification, individual and group therapy, family therapy and education, psychiatric consultation, psychopharmacological intervention, and comprehensive discharge planning to return patients to the community.
