The health information technology program of study is based on a framework that focuses on heath care data, health information analysis, the health care environment, information technology and systems, and organization and supervision. The courses offered by the program are listed below.
MET 101
Medical Terminology I
1 credit
An introductory course to the language of medicine concentrating on word parts, word division, and pronunciation followed by medical terms related to examination, treatment, diagnosis, and surgical procedures.
MET 102
Medical Terminology II
1 credit
A continuation of MET 101, this course focuses on additional system-related terms. Also studied are sense organs, endocrine system, oncology, radiology, and pharmacology. This is a web-based course utilizing Blackboard. Prerequisite MET 101.
HIT 101
Introduction to the Study of Disease I
2 credits
An introductory course to the study of the causes of disease, basic disease processes, and signs and symptoms of disease. This course should be taken concurrently with MET 101.
HIT 102
Introduction to the Study of Disease II
2 credits
Continuation of the study of disease of systems. Also included are diseases of the immune system, special senses, and pathology leading to psychiatric disorders. This course is to be taken concurrently with MET 102. This is a web-based course utilizing Blackboard. Prerequisite: MET 101 or equivalent.
HIT 105
Introduction to the Tumor Registry
1 credit
Introduces the student to the tumor registry. Types of operations and major functions such as data collection, patient follow-up, education and research are addressed. Prerequisite: MET 101 or equivalent.
HIT107
Pharmacology and Pathophysiology
2 credits
Introduces use of pharmacological drugs, life span and how drugs are used in medical documentation. This is a web-based course utilizing Blackboard.
HIT 108
Healthcare Statistics
3 credits
Includes health statistics, research and data processing. Projects include computation, analysis, and display of data. This course includes a clinical component. This is a web-based course utilizing Blackboard.
HIT 112
Introduction to Health Information Technology
4 credits
Introduces medicine, health care, accrediting agencies, and medical records. Content, format, evaluation, and completion of medical records, and functions of numbering, filing, indexing, and retention of records are included. Laboratory activities are used extensively. This course includes a clinical component. This is a web-based course utilizing Blackboard.
HIT 135
Classification I
3 credits
Introduces classification of diseases and operations. Discusses historical development of nomenclature and classification systems, indexes, and registers used for recording codes. Introduction to the usage of ICD-9-CM codebook and the necessary grounding tools needed.
HIT 136
Classification II
3 credits
A continuation of HIT 135, this course focuses on coding problems. Further instruction with ICD-9-CM and introduction to CPT-4 and E/M coding will be offered. Prospective payment issues and DRG assignment are addressed. Prerequisite: HIT 135, this course includes a clinical component both on- and off-site.
HIT 140
Billing and Reimbursement for Healthcare Professionals
2 credits
Importance of coding with guidelines as well as interpreting requirements from all major payers is introduced. Medicare mandates, the importance of proper modifier use and regulations from the Federal Register. This is a web-based course utilizing Blackboard.

Organization of the Medical Record Department

Reviews hospital organization and health information systems. Introduces management functions and systems application in the medical record department. This course includes a clinical component. This is a web-based course utilizing Blackboard.

Legal Aspects of Health Information Technology

Stresses the importance of the medical record as a legal and confidential document. Emphasis on proper release of information, consents, and authorizations. This course includes a clinical component.

Quality Assurance and Health Information Technology

Reviews accreditation and federal, state, and local requirements for quality assurance activities. Reviews the role of quality assessment in the health information divisions. This course includes a clinical component. This is a web-based course utilizing Blackboard.

Healthcare Informatics

This course will apply information system policies and procedures required by National Health Initiatives, current laws and licensure related to health information initiatives. The application of policies and procedures of network usage, electronic health records (HER), personal health records (PHR), public health and other administrative components are addressed.
