Ways of Giving

Grateful patients, long time friends, and members of the hospital "family" make an important difference in the quality of health care at Good Samaritan Medical Center by making philanthropic gifts. Gifts to the medical center support patient care, community benefit programs, health education, and building and equipment needs. Many friends pay tribute to loved ones through "Gifts in Lieu of Flowers," "In Honor of" and "Tribute" gifts.

Gifts in Lieu of Flowers, Gifts in Honor, Tribute Fund

An especially meaningful way of supporting Good Samaritan Medical Center is remembering someone with a gift in their name. For many years, friends and loved ones have been fondly acknowledged through donations made to the Medical Center.

Whether you wish to remember the life of a loved one, are overjoyed by the miracle of birth, or wish to honor someone in a unique way, a tribute gift is a special way to show you care.

For each gift received, a card will be sent to the honored person or their family, recognizing a contribution in their name. Each individual honored will be remembered through a distinct listing in the Medical Center's annual Honor Roll of Donors.

A Gift of Cash

Gifts of cash, paid outright or pledged over a number of years, provide immediate support for the Medical Center. Those who itemize their income tax returns are entitled to a charitable deduction depending on individual tax status.

A Gift of Securities

Gifts of long-term, appreciated securities provide the same benefits as cash for the Medical Center but offer you the additional benefit of avoiding capital gains tax. Your contribution is based on the mean value of the stock on the date you transfer the stock to Good Samaritan Medical Center. You are entitled to a charitable deduction and you avoid the capital gain which would have applied had you sold the securities.

A Gift in Trust

We are happy to work with you and your financial advisor to explore the options and benefits of creating a charitable trust arrangement which suits your unique circumstances and can provide you with income for life or a term of years. For example, you may choose a fixed or fluctuating payment, the rate of such payment, as well as many other features to suit your needs. You incur no capital gains tax on the transfer of appreciated assets (securities or real estate) and you receive an immediate income tax deduction for part of the gift. As with all life income plans, the funds are distributed to the Medical Center upon the death of the life income beneficiary(ies).

A Gift of a Life Insurance Policy

You can make a magnificent commitment to the Medical Center through the purchase of a life insurance gift. Through relatively modest annual gifts, which are used to pay premiums on the policy, you can create a far greater gift than might otherwise be possible. By naming the Medical Center as owner and beneficiary of the policy, your annual premiums will be deductible for income tax purposes.

A Gift of an Existing Life Insurance Policy

Many people own insurance policies which are no longer needed for their original purposes. Such policies can be given to the Medical Center and you will be entitled to an income tax deduction for the cash surrender value and the amount of any future premiums paid.

A Gift Through Your Will

If you are 70 years of age or older, the Medical Center will honor your intentions to provide a charitable bequest to the Medical Center by offering immediate recognition with a named gift opportunity based on the documented value of your bequest.

IRA Charitable Rollover

For people 70-1/2 years of age or older, you can use your IRA or Roth IRA to make a tax-free gift to charity. Consider the IRA charitable rollover if you have excess IRA funds or want to lower the amount of your required minimum IRA distribution.* While there is no charitable deduction, there is also no tax when the distribution is a direct charitable rollover

* This reinstated provision is part of the Pension Protection Act of 2006, which was included in the Financial Rescue Bill (Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, H.R. 1424), signed into law on October 3, 2008.
